Impulse, a Swiss long-range experimental solar-powered aircraft project, and also the name of the project’s two operational aircraft.
Aventure has sponsored solar cells on the Solar Impulse 2 (Si2) aircraft, which on July 26th, completed a 16 month 26,000 mile circumnavigation of the Earth, the first by a piloted fixed-wing aircraft using only solar power.
The Si2’s wingspan is roughly the size of a Boeing 747, but it’s weight is comparable to an automobile.
The privately financed project is led by Swiss engineer and businessman André Borschberg and Swiss psychiatrist and aeronaut Bertrand Piccard, who took turns piloting the single seat Solar Impulse aircraft on different legs around the world.
Aventure salutes these two visionary pioneers in flight for showing the world that clean technologies and energy efficiency can reduce our emissions and improve our quality of life.
